The unconscious mind is where your behaviour is actually controlled. After new behaviour's been consciously learnt, it's assigned to the unconscious mind (i.e. driving a car, riding a bicycle). The way we 'think' about the world around us works in the same way - having taken on concepts and beliefs, we assign them to the unconscious mind and we automatically employ our thoughts, and feelings and behaviours unconsciously - i.e. without conscious control. During our daily lives these unconscious habits of thinking, feeling and behaving are actually controlling us.
To change ourselves we have to start with our automatic thoughts and responses.
