Hypnosis is a completely natural, instinctive state of mind where the critical (evaluating and chattering) mind is quieter and the person's imagination is fully occupied with the task at hand (the focal point of the hypnosis). Within this state of mind, the conscious and unconscious minds are focused and aligned and the person is ready to accept suggestions - responding immediately and positively to the suggestions made.
Modern psychology identifies hypnosis as a heightened state of receptivity and responsiveness.
Hypnotic trance is simple but extremely powerful - and when directed suggestions are used with this state, it becomes possible to change behaviour, beliefs, emotional responses and even bodily functions.
Some people say its like discovering a 'control panel' for the mind and body.
Hypnotherapists work with the client to reach this state before suggesting powerfully crafted ideas, thoughts and visualisations to evoke change at the deepest levels.
Changing the way you think in hypnotic trance is Easy...
Essentially thoughts (conscious & less conscious) guide our lives, offering a framework for our emotions, perceptions and behaviours.
Hypnotherapy works by enabling us to be focused and absorbed on the emotions, perceptions and behaviours that a person would like to have on a day to day basis. In the hypnotic state it's possible to alter the way we think - and so transform our lives.
Hypnotherapy is a cooperative interaction between the client and therapist. The client begins by telling the hypnotherapist what their issues are, and also what they want. The therapist then works with the client to help identify what steps are needed to move the client from their issue, right through to the achievement of their goals. Once the steps have been identified, the hypnotherapist guides the client into a deeply relaxed hypnotic state. Often this is carried out via a guided relaxation, as the client continues focusing more intently on their comfortable inner world. Once the hypnotherapist is content that the client is in a hypnotic state he then presents powerful scenarios and suggestions into the fully absorbed mind of the client - Deliberately put together to enable the client to take the steps to achieve their goal.
The feelings of intense physical & mental relaxation are very enjoyable. Your mind will stay clear throughout - no matter how deep you go. And whilst you may be told to "sleep" you will not really fall asleep. The hypnotherapist is simply directing the person to relax deeply and enjoy the experience.
This is a frequent misunderstanding and nothing could further from the reality. The fact is you can notice and respond to everything whilst hypnotised, and you're an active participant during the process. Everyone in a hypnotic state has the same experience: "Well I could have come out if I wanted, but I didn't want to."
One of the better analogies for the hypnotherapy session is 'dancing with a partner'. When dancing, one partner guides whilst the other one follows. The same happens in hypnotherapy where the therapist leads whilst the client follows. And just as a dancing partner can't be forced to make a specific move - similarly the client has full control and selects to follow the hypnotherapist's suggestions.
The unconscious mind is where your behaviour is actually controlled. After new behaviour's been consciously learnt, it's assigned to the unconscious mind (i.e. driving a car, riding a bicycle). The way we 'think' about the world around us works in the same way - having taken on concepts and beliefs, we assign them to the unconscious mind and we automatically employ our thoughts, and feelings and behaviours unconsciously - i.e. without conscious control. During our daily lives these unconscious habits of thinking, feeling and behaving are actually controlling us.
To change ourselves we have to start with our automatic thoughts and responses.
Ever questioned why when you try to alter a habit or behaviour it only lasts a short time?
This is due to the lack of alliance between the conscious mind - what we would normally think of as 'will power', and the unconscious mind - or what we would call our emotional brain: Almost every time the unconscious, emotional brain "wins" because most of our thoughts, beliefs, concepts and behaviours have been assigned to automatic unconscious control.
(Which is the reason it gets harder to change as you get older, as you've learned more, you've delegated more to unconscious control).
Hypnosis is an empowering method for bringing the conscious mind, your will power and the unconscious mind into alignment - permitting you to produce the powerful, deep changes required to improve your life.
Hypnotherapy is an effective, comfortable, relaxing, drug-free option for personal transformation. It's impossible to do or say anything in the hypnotic state which conflicts with your personal, moral and ethical values.
